Well, tomorrow is Thanksgiving. I don’t actually subscribe to the notion that one should think about the positive only once a year. Experts would probably recommend we do it more often than that, but as my Risky friends and our more frequent visitors know, I’m one to stress and obsess and worry about everything. So once year seems a lot!
However, I have a blog post to do, so I will force myself to think on the bright side. It is probably good for me. 🙂
Here they are, in no particular order, just 10 of the many things I have to be thankful for.
1. That I’m in a good marriage which has only gotten better over 18 years.
2. That I have healthy and happy children who actually enjoy scrambled egg dinners when I’m too busy writing to prepare anything fancier.
3. That there’s a DSW (Designer Shoe Warehouse) within two hours of where I live. (Sometime after I turned forty a latent shoe gene kicked in.)
4. That Jane Austen lived and wrote her stories. Ditto for Georgette Heyer and every modern romance writer whose stories I treasure.
5. That I have seen 6 of my own stories reach publication.
6. That I have already written over 30,000 words during this year’s National Novel Writing Month. See the nifty bar graph on the Nano website!
7. That the processes for creating wine and real ale were invented. (How could one celebrate or deal with relatives over the holidays without them?)
8. That I have a couple of critique partners whom I can trust to give me their honest, intelligent opinions of my stories and who believe in me even when I don’t.
9. That chocolate was invented. (This picture is of The Chocolate Girl, by Jean-Etienne Liotard, c.1743-45.)
10. That I have found such good and talented friends in this Risky Regency community of ours. (Sorry, can’t help getting just a little gushy here.)
So what are you thankful for?

Ooh, and for mincemeat and stuffing!

1. I’m thankful to Gutenberg for inventing the printing press so I have books to see, books to read, books to smell and to caress, and books to hold and to have.
2. I’m thankful and grateful for my heart-sqeezingly amazing family and the FANTABULOUS friends (new and old) I’ve made.
What else? Let’s see. I am thankful for…
3. Microsoft, IBM, the Internet, and the World Wide Web for providing the technology to allow me to communicate with people in far-flung corners of the world and to share a love of writing and reading with them.
4. My ability to write to facilitate the above.
5. Discovery of cocoa and coffee.
6. Laughter.
7. George the III for the Regency era.
8. Central Heating and Electricity. (Last week’s storm reminded me to propriate the god of all things mechanical before winter sets in in earnest.)
9. Those hot, hunky men who may be untouchable but can be viewed freely.
10. Winter passes. Summer arrives. Flowers bloom. Leaves turn green.
I’m also grateful for Risky Regencies! (Both the blog and the books…) This writing journey can sometimes be a bit discouraging, to say the least, and knowing I have a place to go where people share a love for the same weird things I do helps get me through. 🙂
I’m grateful for Hello Kitty. And Orlando Bloom. And Godiva cranberry truffles. And Smashbox Photo Finish makeup primer, which I’ve just discovered and which is a complexion miracle. And Austen and the Brontes. And…well, too many things! Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
I am thankful that I have a wonderful wife who grows more beautiful and talented (not to mention weirder) with each passing day.
I am thankful that I get to do something that I love for a living, and they actually pay me for it.
I am thankful that my family all get along, and actually like each other. (Well, mostly.)
I am thankful that there are so many marvelous books to read. Except when I am feeling stressed out about which book I should read next from my innumerable stacks of unread books.
I am thankful that the Riskies maintain such a delightful blog, at which a person’s… er… eccentricities are tolerated. 🙂
Happy Thanksgiving!

I like to think of this as a place where eccentricities are not only tolerated but ENCOURAGED.
