Capricorn: I wish I could get a newly discovered species of beetle or an underground lake of ice on Mars named after you. I wish I could buy you a temple in Bali, and arrange for you to have your fortune told by the blind prophetess of Rio de Janeiro. I wish I could dress you in 200-year-old velvet robes and silk scarves once worn by Turkish royalty. You richly deserve honors and blessings like these, Capricorn. It’s that time in your astrological cycle when life is supposed to overflow with rewards for the good work you’ve been doing. I urge you to be vividly confident that you do indeed deserve those rewards, and radiate that faith in all directions.
This was my most recent horoscope in a local newspaper. It sounds really good–I do love velvet robes and silk scarves! I’m not entirely sure I understand it, but I can use every bit of encouragement I find. You see, I’m almost done with my WIP–about 30 pages left, by my rough calculations–and I’m at that spot I always reach in a story. That Black Hole where I’m tired of my characters and their lovelorn angst, and where I wonder how I ever thought this story was a good idea in the first place. Yet it’s too late to chuck it and start over with something new. I have to push through to those blessed words–The End.
Needless to say, this is the point in the story where I also become completely addled and annoying. Not Lindsey Lohan-style addled, thankfully. Just–forgetful. I’m lucky I even remembered this is Saturday, and thus my Risky Regencies day. (Not to mention lucky I haven’t been fired from my day job…) I was going to pull together a post about heroes, to go with last week’s on heroines, but that can wait until next Saturday, when I will have (hopefully!) finished this rough draft and started thinking clearly again.
In the meantime–as most of you Risky visitors (and Keira and Diane!) know, I am just a wee bit obsessed with Dancing With the Stars. The finale is coming up this week, and while I’m excited about it, I’m also sad. What am I going to watch on Mondays now??? Where else can I see such sparkly costumes, hear such cheesy music? Where will I find such suspense as “Will Len get off Apolo’s case already? And will Laila finally beat up her divaesque but very hot partner Maks?” Where can I find such flashes of brillance as “Dance Center,” with Kenny Mayne and Jerry Rice (in sequined shirts!) grilling Len Goodman about Billy Ray’s “crappy scores,” and pondering whether Joey’s big butt or Apolo’s facial hair will keep them out of the top spot? That’s just darn good TV, people, better than any I’ve seen since Laura accused Jefrey of not finishing his own collection on Project Runway. Ahhh-good times.
But something productive has come of my DWTS preoccupation, despite what my family might say. Not only have I started ballroom dance classes, but I have been inspired with not one but two story ideas! Not sure when I’ll get to them, since there are at least 3 others lined up ahead of them, but I’m pretty excited. One day, they will each be at the same addled point the WIP is now! To see how I manage to put a young skating/dancing hero in Elizabethan England, stay tuned…
Thanks for listening to this week’s ramble! Do you read your horoscope? If so, does your sign reflect you or not? (As you can tell, my Capricorn driven/worrywart side is out in full force). And do you watch DWTS, or any other shows that inspire you?
Amanda already “outed” Keira and me. YES we watch DWTS, although I can barely stand the second night. I do love Joey, though.
Ammanda only hinted that Keira and I might also share her…um…interest..in shows like Project Runway.
Okay. We can admit it. We watched Project Runway, Top Chef, Top Design, and now Shear Genius. AND DWTS.
I have somewhat unusual Reality TV watching habits. I’ll tell you more on Monday, but although I’ve not missed an episode of the above, I’ve only watched about 5 minutes EVER of American Idol. One glimpse of the scathing criticism given to young people with fragile egos was enough for me. I think DWTS gives the best feedback. They always say something positive.
Oooh, I like that — an underground lake of ice on Mars named after you — and I’m a Capricorn too! π I guess I’m a bit of a worrywart too. . . yep, I read it, but I don’t follow it or anything.
But well, i haven’t watched any of those aforementioned reality shows. . . especially American Idol. That one, with the coverage it gets on the news, it feels like I already watch it when I don’t! LOL
Lois
LOL Amanda! You crack me up.
I have a reality show addiction. I’m always telling my friends that it’s the writer/people watcher in me. I love seeing real people put in stressful situations and watching the true character underneath rise to the top. Yes, I know it is manufactured stress, but it is real to them.
I have to admit though, that DWTS is the one show that I’ve not watched! I don’t know how that happened, probably because of kid’s schedules being busy on those nights. Just yesterday we finally got a DVR, and everyone tells me my life is about to change! Hee hee.
I watch Survivor with the kids, and DH and I like Project Runway, Top Chef and Amazing Race. I’m still ambivalent about Shear Genius.
I’ve got a whole story about Dreamz from this year’s survivor, but that would take up too much space!
Deb Marlowe
Ah, Deb, it is so good to see you here!
And, Lois, (so lovely of you to always stop by), I feel the same about American Idol. I get inundated by it anyway even if I don’t watch.
Busted!
Hello, I’m Keira. And I’m a huge DWTS, PR, TC, TD, and SC fan.
Though, unlike Ammanda, I’m the couch potato variety fan of DWTS. Whereas she is the “booty-shakin’, pounds-melting-away” kind of fan.
No “American Idol” for me either. So either than teasing some friends about it, I was not subjected to Sanjaya’s hair or voice.
I can hardly wait for the new season of “Top Chef” to start. It’s a pity though that they didn’t shed their hostess.
Ammanda, write like the wind. You that next exciting story to write, and sooner you’re finished with this one, the sooner you’ll be able to start on that one. π π
I bet PR was dear Bertie’s favorite show. Perhaps next time they’ll do a gentleman one, hmm?
Are the men reading this blog as interested in reality TV as the women?
Jane George comments here at the Riskies, so I thought I’d post this here.
Congratulations on being a finalist in the paranormal Regency category of this year’s Royal Ascot.
Congrats, Jane! And so good to see you here, Deb! Hopefully you can catch the next round of DWTS. And you’re so right–we only watch those shows for writer-ly research. π
I’ve never been much of a “reality TV” person until now–never watched Idol, Survivor, or (heaven forbid) The Bachelor, but I love the Bravo shows (wish they would do another round of PR) and DWTS. Maybe because I’ve always loved dancing, plus I love seeing people’s personalities emerge as they try something new and very difficult. (Last week we learned some jive steps in my dance class, and I have even greater respect for Joey’s fab jive now. That dance is HARD!)
Thanks for the welcome, guys! My computer has been fighting with blogger, but I’ve finally got it fiagled so I can post! Yay!
I don’t usually read my horoscope; but then, I’m a Pisces, and Pisces don’t believe in astrology.
I usually don’t watch reality shows, either, but I must admit that American Idol is weirdly addictive. Like, Melinda being eliminated. Who saw that coming?
Of course, when they have camera crews start following around nerdy scientists, I’ll be right there. But I fear the audience may not go much beyond me. π

After the next season of “Top Chef,” Bravo TV is going to show its newest show “Top Scientist.” Bravo recently revealed some of the themes behind the episodes: How to fudge data to achieve an ideal graph, how to successfully browbeat students, and how to engage grad students to do the work while you grow fat on the grant. It sure sounds like it’s going to be a fun show, especially since I left grad school behind a decade ago and the scars are just begining to fade.
Hey, Todd!
I’m a Pisces and I believe in everything!
Top Scientist?????? I am soooo there! I can hardly wait for that one.
Jane George!!!!!!!!!!!! I am sooo happy for you!!!!!! A finalist in the Paranormal Regency category of the Royal Ascot. WAY TO GO!
Awwww, thanks Keira, Amanda, and Diane. You are SO sweet to mention it. This Pisces is really pleased! In fact, I promised myself that if I finaled I’d don Regency dress for the Beau Monde Soiree. Gulp.
I don’t have TV, so no DWTS, just dancing in the living room and embarrassing my offspring.
Ooh, my congrats too, Jane! That’s great!
I’m not much of a reality TV person myself either, except for (for whatever reason) singing shows. (Though I never watch the early parts of an Idol season, when they’re being mean to people. I wait till they have a top 20 or so, and then start watching.)
Top Scientist! Love it, Keira! And there will be sudden-death competitions in grant writing, conference schmoozing, and telling your in-laws for the nth time that you are a theoretical physicist, not a physical therapist. π
Cara
Thanks, Cara,
And now the reasons behind the attraction to Thomas Dolby become er, blindingly clear! π

It is true, when we go to Professor School we all take the class How To Sap The Wills And Crush The Egos Of Your Students Until They Obey Your Every Whim 101. (The textbook is Petty Tyranny For Dummies.)
And most government grants include a line item for Blatant Self-Indulgence.

Ah, Jane, that needs no explanation! π
