Do you remember that I said I was finishing a book, due July 31? It is untitled but I think of it fondly as “Pomroy’s Story.” Pomroy is Tanner’s friend (Tanner from Innocence and Impropriety) and Tanner’s story is The Vanishing Viscountess, coming in January. Well, Pomroy’s story isn’t done yet and so I decided to do a quick blog.
I have been working on it for an hour.
I collect early nineteenth century architectural prints and I managed to procure a lovely collection of post-Regency era prints of churches from my friend Tony Wallace, who is an extraordinary collector, but his father was even better. These were in his father’s collection. I have about ten of these, but some of them have two images.
The artist is Tho. H. Sheperd, the engraver is J.F. Havell, and these were published by Jones and Co, 3 Acton Place, Kingsland Road, London in the years 1827 and 1828.
Here’s a sample:
Belgrave Chapel on Belgrave Square
And just to show you how lovely these prints are, here is a detail from St. Paul’s Church, Balls Road, the church at the very top.
I do hope these images come out! I’ve had problems with photos in the last few blogs.
I thought churches were appropriate, because I pray I can finish Pomroy’s Story by Friday.
(Has anyone actually seen any of these churches?)
I’ll share more of my collections as time goes on.
What do you collect?
Diane (going back to Pomroy!)
Oooh, love those — interesting and mighty pretty! π Alas, ah, well, my collections. . . hmm. LOL π
1 – teddy bears
2 – Star Wars with a leaning towards Darth Vader
3 – I dare say I can say I collect NY Mets shirts LOL
4 – Phantom of the Opera stuff
5 – space shuttle and related
6 – but first and foremost, my rubber duckies. π I guess I started 10 or so years ago, once I got into college, because of Ernie from Sesame Street, I dare say. Which reminds me I do pick up Ernie stuff too, so that’s number 7. π
Oh, and I think I started picking up different versions of Jane’s books, three copies of Pride and Prejudice already. . . π
Lois
You are a serious collector, Lois. I am all admiration! Especially about the POTO stuff. I have a photo of GB as Phantom, autographed by him (or someone pretending to be him) and my POTO watch, currently repaired but too fragile to wear, and my little POTO bag, from the play.
Thanks for posting the prints!
I have an absurdly large collection of Nightmare Before Christmas stuff. They’re my toys and I love them. My dream is to have an actual set-piece from the film. Sigh.
I had to move it into my office/studio though, because it was scaring people who came to the door. Not very good Feng Shui, you know. π
Now get back to work, Diane!
Jane-going back to work, too…
Jane george, why am I not shocked at this? Nightmare before Christmas….and you look so harmless.
NBC is the awe-inspiring tale of an artist’s (Jack Skellington’s) journey from creative burnout to re-inspiration. It even has a love story.(Jack and Sally.)
Not buying it? Aw come on, they’re CUTE!
Now go finish Pomroy. I want to read it.
Perfectly Harmless Jane ;-j
Ooo, I used to live in Stepney! But I must admit, I don’t remember the church. Sorry! It’s entirely possible that I walked right by it many times. π
The only things that I really collect consistently are books. π But I would be sneered at by a real “book collector,” because I collect them to read, not to keep locked away in pristine condition with their pages uncut.
I haphazardly collect a few other things–prints, signed photos, t-shirts, mugs, etc. But those are mostly just souvenirs; I don’t have the kind of completionist obsession that a real collector needs…
Todd-who-is-completely-surrounded-by-his-book-collection
Yes, the Stepney Church is really interesting to see, having lived in Stepney! I concur with Todd that I never saw it — I’d bet it’s long gone. (To Nazi bombs if not sooner.)
And weird to think Stepney ever had such a grand church! I guess it was a respectable village or town before it turned into a not-nice part of Victorian London… (Much nicer nowadays, of course!)
Cara
BTW, once upon a time I collected those toothpicks with the tinsel on the top. π
And then signed Star Trek photos! (I have all the biggies, pretty much, in one form or another.)
And BOOKS………
Oh, and tacky London tourist mugs! I love them! π
Cara
Classical CDs and, of course, books. I have a nearly complete set of Georgette Heyer in hardcover. π
I have a nearly complete set of Georgette Heyer in hardcover. π
Ooh, me too! Though a lot of mine don’t have dust jackets. π
I also collect political buttons — from all political parties. Maybe one day I’ll walk around with all my conflicting buttons on and see what people say.
Cara
Oh, and in addition to books, I also collect more books.
Todd-who-will-one-day-be-crushed-under-the-weight-of-his-collection
Well, BOOKS…we all collect books. I’m envious of those Georgette Heyer collections, though.
