April might be the cruelest month, but February freaking stinks. Bye, February, don’t let the door hit you on the way out!
I hate February–my dad and I used to talk about “The Februarys,” that glum malaise that hit both of us after a long winter. This February hasn’t been too awful because it hasn’t been that cold, and it’s been busy, but I am so ready for Spring.
And, since I’ve been so busy (see above), I haven’t been able to write, which is doubtless adding to my glumosity. And I haven’t been able to find time to read! Which really stinks.
So what do you do when you are down in the (February) dumps?
Here are some things I do:
Look forward to Spring flowers
Find out what movies have come out on DVD. Watch them.
Buy a new nail polish.
Anticipate books by favorite authors
Plan short-sleeve outfits
Eat dark chocolate in tiny amounts
What do you do? Besides mock my inability to make my posts look nice, that is.
Happy March!
I bought some daffodils, which are opening very slowly in my cold house, but really cheer me up. Imported from England, too, which I thought was strange.
Usually I enjoy February. It’s my birthday month and it’s a short month. However, this February, bleh! I even considered flipping the calendar early just so that I could pretend it’s next month. Hopefully, March will be a litte better and a little warmer.
My birthday’s in February too, so combined with Valentine’s Day it provides two opportunities for flowers and chocolate and other good things (I adore presents). Plus, I’m one of those rare people who like cold weather. As Rhoda said on the intro to the eponymous TV show (showing my age here), she moved to a cold weather climate because she thought she’d “keep better”. The months I don’t care for are March and November. February is crisp and snowy, but those other two are damp and grey, grey, grey. In February I still like Winter; by March I’m tired of it and want Spring.
I usually like February because it tends to be a good month for skiing. This one has been rotten because for most of it my kids and I have been trading flu and sinus bugs.
About a week ago a friend and I decided we owed ourselves some retail therapy. I bought a couple of new tops, thinking I might wear them to RWA in SF. That helped. 🙂
Megan, hope you get through all the house stuff soon so you can get back to writing!
February used to be one of my favorite months because it was short, but for me, it brings the anniversary of my father’s passing. So now I look forward to cute sandals, cute short dresses, fun kicky polish colors like the new Opi India collection to wear with the cute sandals, planning for RWA in San Francisco, all the research trips I need to take for historical YA. Oh and wearing my new leather pants a lot!
I eat dark chocolate in large amounts. And yesterday I went to the mall and bought some bright new dresses and a pair of strappy sandals for summer and RWA! But to fit into them I have to lay off the chocolate. 🙂
I like cold weather at first. Fall is my favorite season, I love getting out the coats and lighting a fire in the fireplace. But winter’s charms soon fade, and by this point I’m sick of it!
February clearence saless are always a good way to beat the blues. I got a great hat today for 20 bucks. It was originally 50.00.
I switched my purse today for one that is a little more Spring-like. It has palm trees on it.
I may switch to the pink purse I have, though. It’s been calling to me.
I’d really love to buy a new purse, but I haven’t found one I really love yet.
I do have a custom purse made by my friend Beth Come see Beth’s Bagz. But it is a little too Spring-like for now
You guys all have great ideas, and for you February birthday gals, I don’t mean to dis you.
It’s the month in general, not any day in specific, that is a bummer. And this Valentine’s Day was spent arguing with the Spouse, boo, so even that wasn’t good.
I have to concur that this has been a dreary month and it has shown in the fact that I haven’t finished the writing goals I set. SO, I have to decide that March WILL be better! I have hyacinths blooming on my porch. I love the color and the scent. On my Sundays (one of the two days per week I am off)I spend half of the day in bed piled up with my two dogs and three cats watching DVDs, reading romance novels and eating junk (preferably chocolate.) Then I get up and try to spend the rest of the day writing.
I like cold weather and rain, though by February I’m usually ready to think about spring, so I tend to wear spring colors (pink sweaters and pink pashminas are great this time of year), layer print dresses (over long-sleeved jersey tops, like I did yesterday or with cardigans), and buy a new lipstick or nail polish in a spring shade. In the San Francisco Bay Area February can be rain-soaked (one year it rained every day but one) or a spring preview. This year it’s a bit of both. We had a storm last weekend and some lovely weather this week.
A word of caution for those coming to RWA–August in San Francisco can be colder and grayer than February. We sure to bring lots of layers to go with the cute tops and summer dresses.
This has been one of the best Februarys in recent memory. It’s been sunnier, warmer, and drier. I’ve been productive (not reproductive, thank goodness), cheerier (my family thanks goodness), and excited with life. The flowers are slumbering, but the birds have been chirping away. Today was hoppity hop until 7pm–longest day. I know, I’m sounding like a remake of Enchanted, so here’s my list for those dismal Februarys we’ve had in the past.
A spoonful of Nutella always helps. The first daffodils raising their heads up in the sunniest parts of our neighborhood. A full-spectrum lamp. Reading in chatty coffee houses. Friends. Writing.
I like how you’re all “preparing” for National. 🙂
Trader Joe’s 10/$1.49 daffodils? Even better than their tulips this season. I just got 8 inches of snow in the last week, so I have a bad, bad case of Februarys.
Two days ago it was 80 degrees in LA. What’s not to like?
