This is strictly speaking a fall event, when the UK edition of The Rules of Gentility is released by Little Black Dress UK–their first ever historical. But here’s the cover, with a whopping big typo on it because designers can’t spell. Isn’t it cute … and pink. Very pink. Girly. I like it.
And my horn-tooting over, I want to talk about summer even though it’s only April. What are your plans?
I walked from work to the Metro in gorgeous weather–sunny and in the seventies (divine intervention–the Pope is in town, with nuns leaping out of birthday cakes yesterday and forming cheerleader squads at a mass Mass in the new baseball stadium today). The cherry blossoms were giving way to azaleas, and all I could think was oh my god I don’t have any sunscreen.
That’s on the list. Plus, summer pants. I wore mine to travel to Dallas last year for Nationals and upon arrival found they had a huge hole in the butt and my luggage was lost. I kept my knees together until my suitcase arrived. And t-shirts. Why aren’t there any cotton t-shirts in nice colors anywhere this year??? For less than a small fortune, that is. Another question, why can’t I wear a cream-colored t-shirt (not that I can find one this year) without spilling something truly horrible on it within minutes which will never wash out?
So, salvage not-too-stained t-shirts from last year. Find sunhat which my daughter hates (but isn’t nearly as silly as this one) and has probably hidden somewhere. Find stain remover in travel form (I know I have one somewhere) to anticipate future food/tea disasters.
When I came home I looked at the wreck that is my front yard and decided I must get out there, even thought I have to write, because in a couple of months it will be too hot and mosquito-y to do anything.
What are your summer plans? If you’re a writer, are you attending RWA National in San Francisco this year? Are you planning a real vacation? I’m not, as far as I know, and the plans to visit My Father Who Is Not a Tree in England are on hold until I actually have some cash freed up.
Tell us about what you’ll be doing this summer–and apologies for this being so late. Blogger has been a very naughty boy today.
I’ll be going to the RWA conference in San Francisco…and then the next week, I’ll attend Worldcon (the World Science Fiction Convention — which awards the Hugos) in Denver, with Guest of Honor Lois McMaster Bujold!
Looking forward to the madness…
Cara
In June we may be making a trip South to my husband’s paternal side of the family. Not exactly a vacation, but always a nice time.
Then July is RWA and I’m toying with the idea of traveling to Anaheim, while I’m in that West Coast neck of the woods. My cousin lives there.
But I pine for a trip to England.
The RWA Conference in San Francisco IS my vacation this year! I am really looking forward to it! If I can I may sneak a trip to the Moonlight and Magnolias conference too.
Summertime is wading pool time. I put those cheap little wading pools in all the dog runs and they have a ball!
OH and guess what? Lost in Love is a finalist in the Fab Five Contest. I have pinched myself so much in the last couple of months I am black and blue! The Marlene – The Golden Heart AND the Fab Five in the space of a couple of months. I am one LUCKY chick! Soon everyone is going to be clamoring for a Diane Gaston critique!
The Fab Five is one of my favorite contests, O Doggie One! I used to do well in that contest.
Right before I sold, I was finaling in LOTS of contests. Kathy Caskie dubbed me “The Contest Empress.” I may have to give up my scepter to you.
by the way, Joanne Carr from Harlequin Historicals and Mills & Boon is visiting Romance Vagabonds tomorrow. Stop by to see what tips she has for writers interested in HH. http://www.romancevagabonds.com/
We’ll be going to lots of baseball games this summer. I went to San Francisco to see a friend in February so I won’t be making a return trip for RWA. I’ll be checking the website for all the news.
On another note, someone suggested “Dear Frankie” a while back as a Gerard Butler movie. I found it at our library and we watched it tonight. Thank you, whoever gave us the title. We enjoyed it and loved the scenery. (We both feel landlocked every now and then in the middle of the U.S.)
I’ll be at the RWA Conference in San Francisco in July. I’m also planning on going to Philadelphia before the Frida Kahlo exhibit closes and maybe DC before it gets too hot.
Congrats, doglady, on your contest finals! Unlike Diane, I found that my contest scores became more inconsistent — a mix of very high and very low scores before I sold.
Oooh, Lois McMaster Bujold! Lucky you, Cara. Will you dress up? Will Todd dress up?
Oooh, Lois McMaster Bujold! Lucky you, Cara. Will you dress up? Will Todd dress up?
Well, there is going to be some kind of “Grand Ball on Barrayar,” so maybe Todd can fake some sort of galactic uniform and I’ll pretend to be an aristocratic Vor lady… Should be fun!

Janet, if you are looking for cotton tees in lots of colors in reasonable prices check out L.L. Bean and Land’s End websites or catalogs. They have lots; they wash and wear well and last a long time.
Yeah, RWA! I’ll be there and at the Beau Monde. And writing this summer, of course, in the break between the teaching day job…
Land’s End Overstock is chock full of good deals!
I’ll be in San Fran in July. I’m going a day early to visit with my brother and sister-in-law. They promised they’d be in town and I’m believing them. Otherwise, I’m crashing with the first RWA member who takes pity on me.
We hope to go to Williamsburg – unless gas starts to get unreasonable. 😉 Otherwise, we’ll go to Fort Ticonderoga near Lake George and pick up some No. 2 pencils.
DC in the Fall – pre-November or maybe afterwards so I can talk to someone about gas.
Santa, When you know your plans to visit Williamsburg or DC, you must let me know!
My in-laws are in Williamsburg and we visit them often and I live near DC. I should be able to “do lunch” when you come to DC.
Will do!
