Warning! Rambling and semi-incoherent post ahead. I still have Thanksgiving Carb Brain…
(* I recently read Sarah Vowell’s new book The Wordy Shipmates. While not quite as hilarious as Take the Cannoli and Assassination Vacation, probably because I don’t share her obsession with 17th century New England Puritans, it was still very funny and entertaining. And she did remind me of something. Many years ago there was a wacky TV sitcom about 17th century Pilgrims. Yes, you read that right–sitcom about Pilgrims. On network TV. It was called Thanks, and even featured standard-issue schluby, befuddled sitcom dad and rebellious, sullen sitcom teenaged daughter. It only lasted about 3 episodes, and I have no idea how it was greenlighted in the first place, but it was terrifically weird. With the seeming demise of Pushing Daisies, there is a sad dearth of whimsy on TV now. I wish someone would do a Regency-set sitcom…)
Anyway, I hope you all had a great holiday with your families! I ate too much on Thursday (hence the dreaded Carb Brain–and while trying to finish a book, too!). Friday was “movie day” (Australia–gorgeous scenery, epic romance, Grand Gestures, Hugh Jackman. What more does a movie need? Tonight I am going to see Rachel Getting Married, which is probably about as different a film as there can be from Australia, but it sounds great!). Today is “get out the Christmas decorations” day, if I can get off the couch. Despite the fact that decorating involves 2 of my least favorite things, dusting and vacuming, I like it. My grandmother was a Christmas junkie, and I inherited a lot of her beautiful decorations, so I love remembering childhood holidays at her house.
There’s a lot to be thankful for this year, despite all the bad news. I’m thankful for books to read and books to write (am planning on buying almost all books for Christmas gifts this year! Buy A Book, Save An Author, LOL). I’m thankful for our new President-Elect, for Hello Kitty bric-a-brac, pretty party dresses, the Eiffel Tower (and the chance to see it sparkle at night–most beautiful thing ever), jars of Nutella, how cute my dogs look in their Christmas sweaters. And especially for Risky Regencies, and all of you! I’ve so much loved being a part of this community. I love visiting here every day.
And don’t forget to join us Monday, when Linda Fildew and the Harlequin Historicals editorial team will be here at RR! They will talk about upcoming books, what they look for in submissions, and a lot more, plus taking your questions. Diane and I will each give away a signed copy of our books (Diane will give one of the winner’s choice from her wonderful backlist, and I will give a hot-off-the-press copy of my January release, High Seas Stowaway!)
Hi Amanda! Happy Belated Thanksgiving to you too. I’m grateful to Hugh Jackman for making my Thanksgiving so wonderful by taking his shirt off in Australia. I’m grateful to all the readers of Scandalous Women, and all the women I still have to write about. I’m grateful for pretty party dresses, our president-elect and his lovely wife, Starbucks Gingersnap lattes, and Girlscout Thin Mint cookies. I’m also think they should do a regency era sitcom. Paging the BBC! Or at least start adapting some Georgette Heyer on screen. I would love to see Bath Tangle.
I too am grateful for shirtless Hugh Jackman, for chocolate cake, and writing buddies, all of which I enjoyed yesterday in a post-Thanksgiving outing. ๐
Amanda! You must post pics of your dogs in their Christmas sweaters. Immediately.
Somewhere among the sadly dis-arranged books in this room is the only Regency that ever made me laugh out loud- the Mad Miss Mathley. I remember thinking when I read it that here was a Regency that belonged on film.
I’ve got a lot of gratitude, but here I can easily say that finding this wonderful site is one of this year’s new reasons.
“You must post pics of your dogs in their Christmas sweaters. Immediately.”
LOL! They are going to see Santa next weekend, so I will post pics of them then. ๐
“‘m grateful to Hugh Jackman for making my Thanksgiving so wonderful by taking his shirt off in Australia.”
That’s what Thanksgiving is all about, I think! Sure the movie was kinda slow and disjointed and preachy in places, but the shirtless thing made it all worth it. (and I had a peppermint latte at Starbucks yesterday, yum)
Ladydoc, we are grateful you found this blog, too!!
I’m thankful that my family are all healthy and doing well, for cats (maybe with the exception of the one who pooped in the dining room), for books and my life as a romance author, and, of course, for friends!
I hope I get to see Australia. Must find someone who wants to see it with me. Husband won’t be persuaded, I’m sure.
Happy Thanksgiving, Amanda! I def. want to see pix of the doggies, too.
I don’t really want to see Australia, I have no idea why, but I am looking forward to seeing The Quantum of Solace at some point in my lifetime.
Happy Thanksgiving, Riskies!
I’m just back from seeing Australia. I’m also thankful for the sight of a shirtless and wet Hugh Jackman, but equally as thrilled with the ball scene when he is finally clean shaven and in a tux. Ahh.
I’m also thankful for LOL Regencies–what a hoot! And the lovely Risky community!
How wonderful you have your grandmother’s decorations. Enjoy!
I’m thankful for the Riskies, always a fun place to visit.
I am thankful for my family, my friends both near me and far away. I am thankful for my Boxer Blizzard. She’s such a doll.
I am thankful for all the talented authors who share their gifts with me. I’ll be even more thankful when my many more aspiring authors find their way to the bookstores and my bookshelves.
I am thankful for the Risky Regencies and think a show should be named after it. It should be a romantic comedy series ala Moonstruck or Who’s the Boss?
I’m also thankful for Hugh Jackman, Jeremy Northam, Clive Owens, Colin Firth, Toby Stevens, Richard Armitage and so many other cravat clad, champagne polished Hessian wearing actors who ever donned inexpressibles.
“(maybe with the exception of the one who pooped in the dining room)”
Okay, that gives me one more thing to be grateful for. Pets that do their business in the proper place (most of the time) ๐
I am thankful for CHOCOLATE! I am thankful for fabulous historical romance authors like the ladies of this blog.
I WANT to be thankful for the sight of Hugh Jackman shirtless in Australia! Therefore I MUST go and see that movie!!
I am thankful for Clive Owen, Gerrard Butler, the aforementioned Hugh, Matthew MacFaddyen, Orlando Bloom, Viggo Mortensen and Johnny Depp.
I am grateful for my menagerie of cats and dogs that comfort me, amuse me and make me get up and go to work at a job I hate every day because I know they are depending on me.
I’m grateful for family, friends – especially my many writing friends online and off.
Right now I am going to be grateful for a hot cup of Earl Gray and some Scottish shortbread.
Year 2009 is going to be the Year of Friendships for me. So this is the perfect opportunity to say, thank you to the Riskies for three wonderful years.
Oh, I’m in mourning over Pushing Daisies! The best show on TV, and it gets cancelled. Bah.
I had Australia on my list to see anyway, but now it’s moved higher up the list. Wonder why. ๐
So this is the perfect opportunity to say, thank you to the Riskies for three wonderful years.
And to you, Keira, for making Risky Regencies a much nicer place with your presence!
I’m grateful for:
friendships, my cats, my books, great movies, two seasons of Pushing Daisies, Lois McMaster Bujold, Regency romances, tahini, chocolate, cheese, and so much more…
Cara
Pushing Daisies was completely unlike any other TV show, not only in its premise, but in its visual style, storytelling, and sense of humor. May it rest in peace!
