Sorry, you’ve been tricked. I am not the glorious and industrious Amanda McCabe, all ready with this totally awesome post about interesting historical figures. Nope.
By the time this posts, it will be the eve of the American holiday, Thanksgiving. Setting aside some of the painful ironies of the historical event, I’ve always thought Thanksgiving is one of the better holidays out there. It’s not a holiday based on a religious or pagan event. Instead, we Americans get to eat great food, cheer for the Cowboys to lose (Sorry, Niner fan here) and spend time with family.
What’s always fascinated me about Thanksgiving is how many of us take the Thanks seriously. I’ve always thought Samuel Pepys habit of taking account of his finances at the New Year was a great tradition. But I never do that. Because I don’t want to be depressed.
Figuring out things I am thankful for is way more fun.
Here’s my list. In no particular order. I swear.
- My writing friends. Thank goodness there are people out there who understand.
- My son. He’s the best thing that ever happened to me.
- My iPhone. come here, little iPhone. Let me pet you….
- European Sipping Chocolate at Viva Cocolat. It’s a wicked addiction. If you click through, you can see the black couch and chair where I often sit with my fellow writing-chocoholics and talk about books.
- Susan Boyle. I’ve watched her Britain’s Got Talent First Round performance a bazillion times and I’m ALWAYS blown away and thrilled. I have her CD now, and now I can listen all day. Which I did today. Thanks, Susan!
- My agent. Seriously.
- Alexander Skarsgard. I am profoundly grateful for the distraction.
- Creative people in general. You folks blow me away, from favorite writers, musicians, actors, directors, artists and on and on. You put beauty into my life, and for that am truly grateful.
- The men and women who came before me and ensured that I live in a world that is better for me than it was for them. Here’s a few:
- Martin Luther King, Jr.
- John Stuart Mill
- Mahatma Gandhi
- Nelson Mandela
- Betty Freidan
- Gloria Steinam
- Rachel Carson
- Hannah Arendt
- Ellie Weisel
- Louis Pasteur
- Alexander Fleming
- Elizabeth Blackwell
- The men and women of our Armed Forces. I may not agree with how we got there, but thank you for serving our country.
- Pumpkin pie.
- Readers. Even if you don’t read my books. (Really? You don’t? sniff)
- Joe Montana. I was a San Francisco 49ers season ticket holder while Montana was the quarterback, and let me tell you, I have never ever seen anyone transform an event by just stepping on the field. Amazing. Thank you, Joe!
- Laura Kinsale
How about you?
I’m thankful for my friends especially for all their support over the years, my local RWA chapter ditto, the new computer I’m going to be buying today, Richard Armitage, Gerard Butler, and Sean Bean just because, my agent, the fans of Scandalous Women, Mikhail Barishnykov for many wonderful ballet performances, that I get to live in New York, one of the most amazing cities in the world, The Dove Parlour for the mulled wine, Lady Jane’s Salon for giving romance writers a forum.
I’m thankful to still have a job, all of my wonderful friends, my funny family, great books, the internet and the freedom to disagree.
Also, Joe Montana is god.
I am grateful for Choxie Hot Chocolate bars from Target. 🙂 And True Blood–though when will season 2 DVD be out??? And all the great people I have met through writing–that’s the very best perk of this job. And–so many things!
I’m grateful that the Risky Regencies invited me to join the group X number of years ago! I love the community we’ve got here and I always feel like I’m with friends when I post a blog or comment, read a blog or the blog comments.
@Elizabeth Kerri Mahon: W00t! on the new computer!
And yes, Thank you for Barishnykov. What an amazing dancer he was. Amazing.
@karenmc Word. When the niner’s retired Joe’s jersey at halftime (I was there!) there were people in the stands crying just because he was there. I got teary, too. SF has an astonishing adoration of him.
Amanda: I keep checking that DVD release too. There’s a certain scene or two I wish to commit to memory.
Diane: Aww. The community is great, isn’t it?
I am thankful not to have to cook for the next few days, thankful for my writing friends, thankful that I love hanging out with my son, ’cause I do that a lot, and thankful for historical dramas and red wine.
Happy Thanksgiving, all!
I’m grateful for my family and friends, the grand life we are creating together, the opportunity to cook with them tomorrow, Rogue beer and Sipping Dreams European Style Drinking Chocolate.
You put chocolate in No.4, good on you! I have my sister, BF on my thankful list. Then all the good food follows.
Steamy Darcy
I’m thankful most of all to my family and friends. I’m thankful my son came home from Iraq with, as he’d wished for, “two arms, two legs, and a fully functioning brain”. I’m thankful for modern medicine. I’m thankful I still have a job (we’ll see how long that lasts but I’m grateful for today). I’m thankful for all the wonderful authors (Riskies among them) who helped me through the tough times (see references to Iraq and modern medicine, above).
Elizabeth and Carolyn, years ago I had the pleasure and privilege to see Barishnikov dance the Nutcracker at the Kennedy Center. He was in his prime! I also saw other ballet greats: Peter Martins, Jacques ‘D’Amboise. My sister and I had season tickets when they were affordable.
Susan/DC – I’m grateful for your son and for his service to all of us. Please convey my thanks to him and my prayers for his safety always.
I am thankful for all of my writing friends – here at the Riskies and all of the other blogs I visit. You keep me going and keep me believing. Thank you!
My mentors – the Divine Diane Gaston and the Incomparable Anna Campbell. Two of the classiest and most talented ladies on the planet.
I’m thankful for historical romances and for Prinny – the architect of the most fruitful period in history when it comes to said historical romances.
I’m thankful for Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Puccini, Rossini, Massenet, Debussy, Strauss and Alban Berg – their music took me places I might never have traveled and made many, many of my dreams come true.
I’m thankful for my critique partner who doesn’t let me quit, slack up or get away with anything. She is my best friend and the sister fate forgot to give me.
I’m thankful for my four-legged “kids” They keep me sane, make me get up in the morning and give me their unconditional love for the price of some kibble and a few vet bills.
My mentors – the Divine Diane Gaston and the Incomparable Anna Campbell. Two of the classiest and most talented ladies on the planet.
