I believe I have mentioned that I have a story in the upcoming Mammoth Book of Regency Romance. Since I have the digital rights to this story, I’ve commissioned some artwork to go with the digital version. I’m really excited about this, by the way. The artwork is so good it makes me wish there were Regency set graphic novels. Well guess what?
There are graphic novels of Jane Austen’s books!
And there’s more! I came across this interview with author Nancy Butler in which she talks about the success of the P&P graphic novel as well as the recently released graphic novel of Sense and Sensibility. It’s a very interesting interview although I’m not sure I quite agree with her take on S&S. Did any of you know about this? I didn’t. I had no idea at all.
I, for one, would love to see some Regency-set graphic stories. But I’m wondering if they should be adaptations of novels or original stories created for a graphic novel. According to Butler, teens were major buyers of the Austen graphic novel. Well. I find that very interesting.
Don’t you?
What do you, personally, thing about Regency-set graphic novels? Would you read them? What if they were original stories and not adaptations?
I don’t mind Regency graphic novels, but I do always get disappointed when there’s all this P & P stuff available along with S & S stuff for sale. I really want Persuasion stuff! I recently commissioned on etsy 10 items of Captain Wentworth jewelry because I adore Wentworth. He is my favorite hero and I’m always sad that Persuasion does not get the love that the other novels do.
But it’s fun to see Jane Austen break barriers so to speak. Has anyone seen the new Bollywood movie coming out about Emma? I believe it is called Aisha. I already have Bride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility in Bollywood form. Can’t wait for Emma! And maybe one day if I’m lucky a Bollywood Persuasion.
Oh, I would love to see the Bollywood versions. Must go look for them.
After Mr. Darcy, Captain Wentworth is my favorite.
Carolyn, the Bollywood version of Sense and Sensibility is called “I have found it! I have found it!” and is subtitled in English.

Here is the Emma one…not out yet.

They were giving S&S away at BEA, so I snagged one. Haven’t read yet.
I bought the Austen graphic, but I haven’t read that either–I think I’m just not a graphic novel reader, but I wanted to buy it to support the idea of it.
Fun! I’m currently reading and studying graphic novels because my son and I are cooking up a really cool one. I developed the character, he and I will write them, and I illustrate. My “how-to” homework books arrived from Amazon and I’m reading Sandman 1 and Watchmen. Son also says I need to read V for Vendetta.
I’d love to read these as well to offset the uh, hormonal imbalance.
And I LOVED Bride & Prejudice. Daughter & I watched it together and now she wants to get married on an elephant.
I was happy to see Nancy Butler’s name, as once upon a time, when the Signet trad Regency line still existed, she was an autobuy for me. Can’t give her credit for authorship here, but at least I know she hasn’t slipped off the edge of the Earth and is still involved in Regency romance (even if a different medium).
I agree — there needs to be more attention to Persuasion, and for that matter, all of her works. But my teenagers liked the P&P graphic novel, so I will definitely be buying S&S.
I have the P&P, and it’s adorable! (I agree, Jane A.–we need more attention to Persuasion! It’s also my favorite Austen novel). Hopefully these books will bring more young people to the novels. I know the potential for a new Austen audience is probably there–a few months ago I spoke on a panel of historical writers at the local library (I was in charge of speaking about the Regency!), and there were so many teenage girls there. Turns out they had totally loved the ’05 P&P movie and then sought out more movies and the books, and they were very, very enthusiastic to learn more about the period.
And I LOVE Bride & Prejudice! I’m a sucker for Bollywood movies anyway, and combine a semi-Bollywood movie with Austen and it’s too much fun! I am definitely going to look for the S&S version
I, too, was pleased to see Nancy Butler’s name on this project. I remember years ago when Nancy, Amanda, and Andrea Pickens sneaked me into a Penquin Publishing Party, a real treat for a then unpublished writer!
All this excitement about Bollywood and Jane Austen comic books and I forgot to say to Carolyn what a cool thing it is for her to be digitally publishing her own Mammoth story!
