I’m about to start writing Leo’s Story, my Diamonds of Welbourne Manor book. Amanda’s The Shy Duchess will be out in March and Deb Marlowe’s How To Marry a Rake comes in May. And here I am not even started….
When starting an Historical, of course, research is essential. Over the years, I’ve compiled a bunch of bookmarked websites about the Regency to help with research, but, let me tell you, nothing I have is as thorough as this list on Jane Austen’s World.
Take a moment to look at this list! It’s so comprehensive.
Some of my go-to websites appear here, like:
Correct Forms of Address This website always answers any question I have about titles, precedence, and all matters relating to address.
The Regency Reference Book
Emily Hendrickson’s book is a treasure in itself in all the information she presents. This is a book you have to buy but is well worth the cost. I love that it is now on CD because I can search it so easily.
The Georgian Index
I love this site for many reasons, but one reason I return to it over and over is to find specific shops in London, so my characters can visit real places on real streets.
Greenwood’s Map of London
I get very particular about where my characters live and how they walk around London, so this map of London in 1827 works very well for me.
There are so many more research sites listed at Jane Austen’s World, I could spend a year exploring.
Take a look at the site and pick out one of the links that intrigued you. Or tell me your favorite research site.
And if you live in the DC area, come see me moderate a panel of Historical authors on Feb 13 at Borders Bailey’s Crossroads. I’d love to see some Risky readers.
Don’t forget to visit the Harlequin Blog for their Regency Bicentennial Celebration all month.
And, Maureen! email me. You were my last week’s contest winner!
One of my favorite research sites is of course Edwardian Promenade. The Edwardian era is fascinating to me, and Evangeline has a great collection of books and links on her site.
I’ll have to check that out. I think the Edwardian era has much in common with the Regency. Well, the fashions are certainly beautiful!
Agreed on the fashions of the Edwardian era. Downton Abbey had me salivating at the beautiful clothing. I would have loved to be a Gibson Girl.
Diane, I had to laugh at your correct use of “an Historical” my sister-in-law and I just got into a big argument about whether an was correct. I said it was and she was arguing for ‘a’. She is not a native English speaker though, but we always argue grammar. This looks like a great source of resources if I ever write a Regency.
In the novel I started (you were kind enough to read the beginning and comment on it) I just ended up adding a Renaissance book written in code. So now I’m trying to learn about codes. Anyone have a good go-to site they use for that? I’ve found some interesting things. I have around 100 pages and don’t ever expect to get published, but it’s fun writing.
Jane Austen/Rachel
Treasure trove is the exact term. What a lot of resources. Thank you for sharing them.
I’ve visited Jane Austen’s World before, but never got the page you linked! I am in SO much trouble now thanks to you! I could spend hours on sites like these! One of my favorites is the Proceedings of the Old Bailey. There are several links on that site that take you to the lives of people executed at the Tyburn, etc and even the every day workings of the court have little bits and pieces that can inspire whole novels. So many sites and so little time. SIGH !!
Another site I love to visit is onelondonone. In addition to great daily posts the links and sidebars are full of wonderful research !
Candice Hern and Gaelen Foley have some great research on their sites as well.
Love Emily Hendrickson’s book! I also like What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew. 🙂
Rachel, I do know grammar…mostly.
Alas I know nothing of value about codes or the Renaissance.
Louisa! Kristine and Vicki are going to kill me for leaving out onelondonone. I LOVE that site!!!
Beth, enjoy exploring!
Judy, isn’t Emily’s book wonderful??
Oh I know! I visit onelondonone at least once a day! Such great little sidelights in addition to great daily articles. Not to mention an ongoing feud between a certain Divine author and one of the mistresses of onelondon over custody of a certain General Artie!

Hi, I believe your website could be having web
browser compatibility issues. When I take a look at your blog in Safari, it looks
fine but when opening in Internet Explorer, it’s got some overlapping issues.
I simply wanted to give you a quick heads up! Aside from that, wonderful site!
