I had this HUGE HUGE HUGE project at the day job that took weeks of testing and preparation across multiple departments– this was at the same time I was finishing a book. (Can you say STRESS?) As the database administrator, my job included making sure everything worked as it did before. This meant that there were application developers who simply had to test in the new environment. They swore up and down that they did, but when the day comes? Their application logins fail. Well, that can only mean they did not test. Fine. But why lie about it?
Anyway, I lived a life of remarkable stress on all fronts for a long time. But the project is over, the book is turned in and . . . . I got sick.
I knew that would happen, of course. I spent most of last week fighting something off and well, I have been having my own illness pity party for the last 3 days and am now hyped up on medications such a decongestants etc.
What this means is that as I type this, I am not at the top of my game in any sense of the word.
So, it also turns out that I have managed to acquire two copies of The Kyoto Costume Institute’s Fashion which has amazing pictures and content in it. It covers the 18th to the 20th century. I have two copies because, as it turns out, there are different versions of the book, a one volume version and a 2 volume version. The covers are COMPLETELY different but the content is identical.
Leave a comment (See below) if you would like a chance to win the one volume book from me. It’s a high quality soft-cover (really stiff cover).
You have until Midnight Pacific, June 15th to comment. No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited. Winner chosen at random.
Your comment should be about something. Just something, OK? Your favorite superhero. The merits of Skarsgard vs. Patel
Oh, here are some pictures for reference:
Or you could comment about how ardently you pray for my complete recovery from this cold.
Or something.
First off, I do hope you are feeling better soon. Seconly, I would love to win this book. I love looking at historical costumes while being grateful that we no longer wear corsets, hoops, etc. Thanks so much for the giveaway.

p.s. favorite hero = William Marshal the famous knight.
Hope you are feeling better already.
This looks like a lovely book and handy to keep around for reference and dreaming.
As for favourite superhero, I would nominate my friend who is currently juggling a full-time job, a master’s thesis, two young children and a mortgage and making it look easy.
Carolyn, you poor thing! I hope you feel better soon. Now I feel silly about whining about merely finishing a book.
I have so many many times bought two of the same book and with the exact same covers, too.
Drink lots of tea and watch as many movies as you want!
Oh, I feel your pain! We’re all trying to recover from colds here, too. Hope yours goes away soon. And thanks for the chance to win such a lovely book! I love books like this.
Prayers your cold is soon gone.
Superhero…. hmm, it has to be Superman!
There are actually three versions, LOL! The small one-volume, the small two volume, and then there’s a large, hardback, two volume 25th annivesay editon. Love this book no matte which editon it is though. Bizarely, the large one appears to be the cheapest at the moment (it’s the only one still in print).
Carolyn, it doesn’t work once you have the cold, but when you feel one coming on I recommend cutting up some fresh ginger, steeping it in hot water for three hours and then drinking lots of it. I add honey, but some people just like it how it is. It helps build up your immune system. I normally buy the ginger, cut it up and freeze it. That way I always have some on hand. Hope you feel better!
@artie mesia: I’ve heard that about Ginger before. I need to try that.
Thanks for all the sympathy. I am feeling a bit better today.
The black-and-white naked man definitely needs some fashion. Or something. Isn’t he cold?
Carolyn, you could definitely warm him up, especially if you’re running a fever. Wouldn’t that be fun (hold the sneezes).
The book cover image confused me. Is it a woman in a red-and-yellow dress or a goldfish that looks like a woman?
Get well soon.
Hmmm, you offer an impossible choice here, but I will always have to go with A. Skars…
And I love that book! I strongly encourage everyone to try and win this copy, you won’t regret it. 🙂 (and sending good vibes to make the cold vanish)
Definitely try the ginger thing, Carolyn. It works! Hope you feel better soon. Get some rest and if you have chills just watch 300 ! Gerard Butler ALWAYS warms me up!
I am SERIOUSLY coveting this book !!! Would LOVE to have it in my reference library.
Favorite superhero ? Underdog, of course!
(That response is probably dating me terribly!)
And I am with Amanda. Gotta go with Alex AKA Erik the Vampire. Talk about warming a girl up!
What an interesting picture on the cover. That promises to be a great book…
Hope you’re health improves quickly! Cold’s are awful, so all the best.
Sorry to hear you’re sick, Carolyn. 🙁 We’ve got a vicious bug going around here too. Agree with Artie’s comment about drinking plenty of ginger tea, even while the cold’s passing it’s still good. Add a bit of lemon zest/juice for some Vitamin C too!
The fashion book looks AMAZING. I would have been a fashion designer if I was any good at textiles … Anyway. I would love to have this among my art/design reference collection.
(And I’m still going to be dull and say Batman is my superhero! Simply because it is TRUE.)
You will all be happy to hear I am feeling MUCH better. I’m going to stock up on ginger root so I can make that tea next time *shudder* I feel a cold coming on.
FYI, the man in the B&W pic is my Other One True Love, Upen Patel. Mr. Skarskgard, of course, being my OTL.
Summer colds are the worst. It just doesn’t seem right to have one when it is warm and sunny outside. Hope you are able to shake it soon so you can actually enjoy having those big projects done.
I would love to have this book. I am making period costumes/clothing for several family members. I like just about any period and try to have one for Ren Fairs and other events. My daughter and her family are Civil War reenactors, so I am working on day dresses, ball gowns, undergarments, vests, frock coats, and pants for them and myself & husband. I have done native american clothing also, but I doubt it is in this book. Our town sometimes has Victorian events, so something along those lines is on my list.
This book would be a great reference for these sewing projects. It is also nice to have something to look at if I am curious about what characters might be wearing in a book I am reading.
I hope you are taking advantage of your sick time to take it easy, watch movies, and read some good books. Take good care of yourself and recover soon.
