Not even a month ago I signed up for Pinterest. You can see my early days here when I was just dipping my toes in the Pinterest water. Now it has become a bit of an obsession, my place to go when I’m stuck writing, needing a break from writing, or should be writing.
The thing is, it is wonderful inspiration for writing Regency. There is, for example no end of Regency fashion images. I especially like the photographs of real clothing. Somehow I can imagine my characters in such clothes more easily than from a fashion print.
Like this one on the left, originally from the Bowes Museum.
I also liked images of men’s fashions, which we so rarely see in fashion prints.
Another way Pinterest is useful is that it provides visual ideas for setting, whether it be inside or out.
Here’s are images of the drawing room at No. 1 Crescent, Bath and of Keddleston Hall
Then there is art that inspires, like this image from Jane Austen’s World
I’m sure you get the picture (pun intended).
Images are powerful. A glance tells us so much in an instant, not only about the facts of the subject matter but also about color, design. Even lighting can convey mood or emotion.
I know some of you have joined the fun at Pinterest, because you’ve repinned my images and I’ve repinned yours. It is fun to see who likes what.
I’ve never quite gotten the hang of social media beyond blogging until this particular form.
What about you? What is your favorite form of social media? Do you like Pinterest?
By the way, for those of you who cannot wait until A Not So Respectable Gentleman? is released on July 24, it is available now for order at eHarlequin!
I’m loving “A Not So Respectable Gentleman?” 🙂
Pinterest is great for creating a story board. I also enjoy the pictures, recipes, ideas, and funny stuff.
I spend most of my social media time at Facebook, short phone calls via print. 🙂
Oh my, I am in love with that gown.
I’ve been having fun with Pinterest too. Just made a casting board (across time & space) for one of my books.
I am trying to stay off-line this month. For the most part it’s working lol.
I’m also really enjoying Pinterest! It feels more like a “hobby” than like “work” (Twitter feels more like work to me!) and I have found way too many shoes and dresses to “pin” on my boards…
Oh, thank you, Judy, for the nice words about Leo’s story.
I think Pinterest would be great for a story board. Marvelous idea!!
Jane George, so glad you are staying off the internet. Keep us posted on how that goes.
Amanda, I think of you every time I see a pretty dress on Pinterest. Pinterest even feels like RESEARCH. Whoo hoo.
Yikes! I’ve avoided even glancing at pinterest because I already have so little time to write but seeing those fun pictures you grabbed is a horrible temptation. Might have to give it a peak sometime soon and hope I don’t become an addict! Thanks for sharing!
My Blog
I really like Pinterest the most. I love pinning things that spark my imagination when I’m writing. And it really is a great research help. That’s my story and I’m sticking with it!
Lindsey, I think Pinterest is useful for research. I really do!
Louisa, I’m glad you agree with me.
I tried to avoid Pinterest, but finally broke down and joined. I really haven’t had time to do much with it. I find lots of images on Facebook I would like to save, but you can’t Pin from Facebook. I need to find a way around that.
I can see how handy it is for an author. Better I would think than pictures taped to hour walls while you write.
Late to the discussion, as usual, but it’s been a particularly busy week recovering from vacation, then house guests, then dealing with car trouble, appliance trouble and planning a birthday party. Whew!
Pinterest sounds like so much fun but I just can’t fit anything new in at this point. Gotta get back to the mess-in-progress!
