I have been absent at the Riskies for a bit, but I am here today. ::hand waving:: as to reasons, but the short version is Life. I have had my head entirely in my very overdue current project, Surrender To Ruin, which is currently out for the second round of editorial. Here’s the cover:
It’s Book 3 in the Sinclair Sisters series, and I expect the book to be out by summer, though right now it feels like the Never Ending Project. (Life. Yeah That.)
Anyway, my birthday is coming up very soon and I would like all the Risky Readers to celebrate. I will assemble a prize of some of my favorite books (across all genres) and a few other surprises, and we’ll work out the shipping etc and select a winner or two or several from among the commenters.
Rules:
Void where prohibited. Must be 18 to enter. No purchase necessary. Contest closes at 11:59PM EST April 30, 2017.
This blog is in EST!! Your comment timestamp serves as the guide for timely entrance.
Winner chosen at random from among the qualified comments. Alternate winners will be chosen if I don’t hear from the winners within 7 days of notification.
To enter:
- Leave a comment to this post in which you tell me something interesting or tell a funny joke or anecdote. No judgment here. “I like pretty flowers” is kind of short, but hey. That’s sufficient.
- Provide a valid email when you comment so you can be contacted. The email for the comment form is sufficient.
I once fell up a flight of inside stairs, while wearing ice skates. I was four.
I recently flew into Las Vegas. After the plane landed, the pilot turned on the loudspeaker and told everyone to remember “What happens in Vegas” at which point of course all the passengers replied “stays in Vegas.” “No!” He said. “It shows up on Youtube!”
Something interesting: A podcast called Witch, Please – two lady scholars discuss the Harry Potter books and movies. It is like taking an awesome literature class with two interesting and funny professors. It is my happy place right now. Highly recommended to anyone who is interested in Harry Potter (and maybe to people who aren’t, too).
Happy “almost” birthday! My office is just a tiny converted room with a short doorway and you wouldn’t believe how many times I forget to duck far enough going out that I slam my head off of the top and then have to let the stars clear before I try to go downstairs! I am graceful like that 🙂
A couple of my favorite quotes from over the years that I’ve been reading…
It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees.
Be careful when fighting monsters that you yourself don’t become the monster
Love u Carolyn !!!!
I snore louder than my English Bulldog. :/
Well a very Happy early Birthday to one of my favorite authors. I have loved your books since reading Scandal. And I wondered had Sophie’s brother survived the shooting (I understand it is no go plotwise – but still what a fabulous character) what would have been his story. So I set out reading about young politicians during 19th century England. One research book led to another covering unrelated aspects of life in that time. What a fascinating time it was, with all the change happening. Anyhow, to cut a long story short, I was inspired to begin writing myself. If it ever gets completed or published, it is because of your book and that one character.
I’ve bought four new bearded Iris. The most amazing colours. Can’t wait to see them flower. Can’t wait for Surrender to ruin.
I hope you have an awesome birthday! 🙂
I was obsessed with old Gene Kelly movies when I was a kid and I always wished I could learn to tap dance. I was 31 when I realized that I spent all my time focused on my kids and almost none on myself. So I went out and found a tap class for beginners that same day. I started out dancing with 8 year olds and I felt silly but I also lived it. It’s been 4 years and I still take lessons– in an adult class now although sometimes I still go dance with the kids.
I have the worst singing voice ever, just a screech, but the music master at school put in me in the choir and I was TOTALLY convinced I was a wonderful singer, my poor parents had to put up with me practicing ALL the time.
I was once going to a concert out of town, and we got lost a couple times on the way. Then we finally got there, just as the show was starting, and there weren’t signs inside the venue to direct us to our seats, which were up in the nosebleed section. We were scurrying around, I was almost in tears, and we bumped into a person. This guy happened to be from a radio station, and his contest winners didn’t show up. He handed us two front row center seats, and told us to enjoy the show. Every little delay led us to bumping into that guy at that particular time. Cool, huh?
Of course I am ineligible to enter, but just wanted to say my best wishes for finishing this book and sympathies on that Life thing.
Your Ruin series has me ruined for other historicals❤️❤️❤️
To aid in my nascent writing career, I created a private space in my condo–had a huge desk built, shelves put in, a few of my favourite pictures on the wall, and even a fainting couch (aka the pull-out sofa for guests.)
Turns out, the couch does very well for piling laundry and is perfect for sorting papers that need to be filed. The desk is covered with bills, paid and unpaid, unopened mail and extraneous knick knacks, broken electronics, etc. In defence, I have moved my writing operation to the living room, which actually has a much better view. It’s also very tidy as everything else is in my office. My words per day has really picked up!
Happy Almost Birthday.
Your Ruin series has me ruined for other historicals <3
People who live in glass houses should not cast stones.
Birthdays should be month long celebrations!
How I knew Hubby needs a Hearing Aid:
I got all fixed up to go out to a nice restaurant. I told him that I was “gussied up.” … He wanted to know why was I a Guppy?
We went to Miracle Ear the next week.
Hey, it’s great to hear from you. And that cover is sweet~
So, I’m pretty busy this weekend and will have lots of books to deal with so, I’ll pass on this super amazing treat.
Whenever I go to the hair salon and they put that plastic cape around me, I want to stand up and say “No, I’M Batman”.
Sophie ‘s character is one of my all-time favorites. After reading Ritu’s post, I agree that her bother’s story would have been wonderful! (John???) You never know! Soaps bring there dead actors back all the time!

“Happy almost birthday… I know you must be busy. I know I am, because My birthday is tomorrow. Anyway, I thought that I would post a poem. I believe that a nice Poem, can make the beginning of our day remain good. I hope you’ll like this one… I wrote it a few years ago. Anyway, have a wonderful “B” Day!

I’ll be there for the joy, I’ll be there for the tears; We’ll stand there beside each other no matter the fears. I must stand tall and strong is what I must do, to cast aside all my anxiety; so that I can protect you. To Tuck you in tight when I wish you sweet dreams, as we watch the night sky sparkle and gleam. To drink hot coco when the weather get’s cold, to be snuggled up tight in my protective hold. To stand there and watch the seasons change, to reassure my precious heart that things won’t become eary and strange. To experience the moment when joy explodes, Where a new life is born; and the ever-changing cycle begins to flow. To hear a babe laugh; giggle; and cry, to remember again how we wondered to ask why. To watch our children take that first little step; or experience when they throw their first tantrum; and wonder how long they can remain upset. And then time flies by and we wonder where it went; because were all gathered together at a very special event. Yes, it is true; I am at my children’s wedding; and we wonder if the magic will last or where it is heading. But soon those thoughts will change, and we’ll be catapulted back to the beginning; where that thought first occurred; in our heads first imprinting. We need not worry what the future will bring; As long as your here beside me and I’m wearing your ring.
Forever Yours: I Love You!
I am late with your birthday greetings this year because. Well. Life. And going to Texas on Monday isn’t helping. Thinking of you and remembering fondly many birthdays past celebrated together on Channing. Miss you.
I totally understand the Never Ending Project–have one or two of those myself. 🙂 Good luck, and gorgeous cover!!!
