Happy Christmas Week, everyone! It’s a bit crazy here this week, with finishing up work (I’m off tomorrow after noon for a whole week and half, hooray), finishing up shopping/wrapping/baking, working on the WIP (due February!) and general holiday looniness. But I do get to go see a preview of The Young Victoria tomorrow night, which I am very excited about–I’ve been waiting for this movie for a long time! Next week I’ll be able to let you know what I think of the story, the acting, etc, but I am pretty sure there is one aspect I will like very much, which is the costumes (of course!). They look very authentic in the photos, as well as quite pretty. (And if Emily Blunt and Rupert Friend are also a bit prettier than the originals, well who am I to complain?) (There is already an excellent review at Scandalous Women!)
So while I run off to do some lunch-hour last minute shopping today, enjoy the images!
(I love how the Queen’s tiara is the model for the one “Victoria” is wearing! And how beautiful is that shade of blue?)
(First comes love, then comes marriage…)
(Then comes Victoria with the baby carriage! I’ve always enjoyed this portrait because they look so supremely unconcerned that little Princess Vicky is playing with dead birds)
What do you think of the costumes? Have you seen the movie yet (and if so what did you think??) What other historical figures would you love to see made into movies, and who would you cast?
I think it’s fascinating that Sarah Fergusun (Duchess of York) is one of the producers. She feels Victoria was “misunderstood,” and if anyone knows what that’s like, it would be she. The movie looks delicious–thanks for the pix!
I saw it, loved it and reviewed it on my blog. I love all things Victorian so I couldn’t miss this one. It was still on when I was in London in April but I couldn’t go. So I got the DVD from Amazon UK as soon as it was available. It’ll porbably never be released in Italy…It must be great to see it in theaters!
Maggie, I’m glad you reminded me! There is this interesting article on the NY Times’ site about Sarah Ferguson and the movie (and her life now). I think her daughter has a bit part as a lady-in-waiting, too.

I can’t wait to see this movie! I have heard soooo many good things about it.
The dresses are beautiful, but, oh, poor Rupert Friend. One thing I find painful about the Victorian era are the fashions in hair, facial hair, and clothing for men. How to spoil a perfectly handsome man!
I definitely want to see the movie, though. I think I’ll take my writing group. Last time I talked them into going to the movies we saw Bright Star and came out depressed (but I loved that movie)
I’ve seen it and enjoyed it, but they had to do a lot of explaining through captions!
I love the pics you’ve posted here 🙂 They’re great.
BTW, have I told you how much I enjoyed your books the Winter queen and The Maid’s Lover? They are good companions. thank you and looking forward to your next book release!
Thanks Amanda for the shout-out about my review. Yes, you can see Princess Beatrice briefly in the opening scene during the coronation. I adored this film and the costumes are gorgeous. Diane, Rupert Friend actually has a pretty decent hairstyle in this compared to some of the other men, particularly the older men who play Robert Peel and the Duke of Wellington. Watching The Young Victoria and then watching Cranford on Masterpiece Classic made my weekend.
Scandalous Women’s review is spoilery, but I can’t wait to see it. When’s the general release?
Leanne, I believe it’s supposed to be out Christmas Day, but not sure how widely.
On a funny note, I just got a Twitter notice that Young Victoria is now following me! A few days ago Catherine of Aragon started following me, too. Wish it was really them. 🙂 (btw, if YOU want to follow me, it’s AmandaMccabe1)
Leona, thanks so much for reading (and enjoying!) my new books!!!
Happy Christmas to you dear Ammanda, Riskies, and frequest commenters.
I’m looking forward to seeing “The Young Victoria.” The NYT interview with Sarah Ferguson was rather well done, though the review of the movie was patronizing (including a comment of ripped bodice at the end).
The movie looks fantastic and I can’t wait to see the costumes. My best friend saw it back in the spring when she was over in London and kept going on about how I need to see it the second it comes out. These pics make me even more excited to see it!
Totally agree with Diane about the Victorian hair styles, especially the facial hair for men. Muttonchop whiskers and center parts are about the most unsexy hairstyles ever (although YMMV). For some reason I love big old Victorian houses, with all their turrets and porches and eccentricities but do not at all like the fussiness of the interior decoration (flocked wallpaper!) and clothing (flounces!). The
Victorian era is a fascinating one, but I like the aethetics of the Regency much more.
I can’t wait to see this film. I have watched a couple of the trailers online and I just love the LOOK of the film. Interesting that Fergie is one of the producers. Good for her!
I haven’t seen Bright Star, O Divine One, but I want to. I read the book and really loved it.
EKM, my CP / best friend sent me the DVDs of Cranford for Christmas!! I am so excited. I have never seen it and she loves it. Can’t wait.
I would love for someone to do a really well-researched, epic about the life of Wellington and then another about the life of Nelson. Something that shows their lives (warts and all) and does them justice. I’m just not sure who to cast in the leads. Any ideas?
I can’t wait to see this either. Thanks for the pics, Amanda!
As for good biopics I’d like to see: Aphra Behn, Byron, the Kembles…
O Doggie One, I thought Christopher Plummer made a great Wellington in the movie of Waterloo. Of course he would be too old now.
Let’s not forget that Gerard Butler plans to play Robert Burns!!
Now Gerard as Burns is REALLY something to look forward to, isn’t it? Can’t wait!
Can’t wait to see this movie, Amanda, thanks for all the great pic comparisons.
Young Victoria is an amazing movie! I really loved it A LOT! I watched it just before I left to London and I was so interested about Victoria after seeing the movie that I checked the Victoria&Albert museum and other stuff related to Victoria.
And Rupert Friend, he is simply gorgeous as Prince Albert.
