Conferences are twice as hard. There are day outfits and evening outfits, each requiring shoes and bags and jewelry. My Regency-style gown for the Beau Monde Soiree (plus gloves, reticule, fan!). Shawls, because the air conditioning always seems set on ‘glacial’ at the hotel. Promo stuff, like books and cover flats (maybe I need a big sign saying Buy My New Book, Out in August! Please, I Beg You! Too over the top?). Makeup (my everyday makeup consists of a little concealer, lipgloss, and mascara, but conferences require enough products to see a diva through La Traviata, it seems). Zit cream–Very Important. Who wants to meet their editor with a huge pimple on their nose? A little notebook to jot down interesting gossip, er, very useful tips for Improving My Craft. And–I know I’m forgetting something.
I’m beginning to feel like the girl in this Mary Cassatt painting–any minute now I’ll just collapse in a frustrated heap! On Tuesday, I’m leaving for the RWA conference in Dallas. So today that means one thing–packing. I am not a good packer. I have an aunt who travels to Europe and Asia a lot, she can take one little bag with 5 black and white jersey separates, 1 pair of shoes, and 2 scarves and look like Grace Kelly for a month or more. Not me. Even a casual family vacation seems to involve vast quantities of clothes and shoes, not to mention books. Hey, I never know what I want to read when I get there (a romance, a mystery, a biography?), and I want to be prepared! Plus they can serve as ballast in the bottom of my suitcase (I’ve been researching 16th century ships lately, you see).
Last night I made a ‘clothing chart’ with each day’s activities and what I plan to wear. Then I pulled everything from my closet and drawers and piled it all up in the middle of the bedroom floor. This morning, I woke up from an exceedingly pleasant dream (I was going to the Oscars with Orlando, and had these fabulous Louboutin shoes…) to find that everything had not miraculously leapt into the suitcase overnight. In fact, the cats had most unhelpfully slept on the pile, requiring a great deal of laundry and de-fuzzing.
It will all come together in the end, at least it usually does. In the meantime, I made a list of Things I Will Remember to Do at Conference:
1) Have fun, learn a lot, meet new people
2) Don’t squeal TOO loudly when first seeing friends in the lobby
3) Bring my cell phone charger (otherwise how can I find my friends to squeal at them?)
4) Drink plenty of water
5) Don’t talk about what a Terrible Person Agent/Editor Whatsit is in the public elevator. Not that I would, of course, but said Agent/Editor would be bound to be in that selfsame elevator
if I did (which I would not)
6) Act like–no, try to act like a Grown Up Author
Now, I have to go sit on my suitcase and try to get it to close. If you’re in Dallas next week, come look for us! Diane, Janet, and I will be there. Cosmos all around!
And when you get home, be sure and sign up for the Risky Regencies newsletter at riskies@yahoo.com! All the conference gossip will be there (or some, anyway…)
*sniff* more people going to the conference that there is no hope for me to go too. . . π Just kidding, have fun there!!! π
Lois
I saw a bunch of writer friends yesterday who were going to the conference and started to feel a bit sad that I wouldn’t be there. Amanda, I totally sympathize with your packing dilemma. I’ve learned to be a pretty efficiient packer but confeences are hard–as you say, there are so many different outfits and writers’ materials invovled. I have these great mesh cubes I got at a travel store that are fabulous for packing tops, lingeries, etc…–they keep everything tidy and organized and way cut down on space. (Large ziplock bags also do the same thing very well). As for books, don’t forget you’ll acquire a bunch more at the conference, so you pretty much just need to worry about the flight there.
Good luck and have a fabulous time!
Lois and Tracy, I wish you were going to be there, too! I feel like I already know people I “see” here at RR, and get so excited to meet them at conference. π
Where do you get those mesh cubes? I’m going to have to look for some. I try to put things like scarves and lingerie in baggies, and wrap shoes up, too.
Also, I’m addicted to looking at all the travel doodads in the Travelsmith catalog! They swear you can fit everything in one of their magic knapsacks, but I’m not sure…
Amanda, I got the mesh cubes at a travel store in San Francisco–can’t remember the name, but I think any travel/luggage store would be likely to have them. I have two large ones for tops/sweaters and two smaller for lingerie. They make packing so much easier (then I put htem in drawers in teh hotel and keep my clothes in them, which makes packing to go home tons easier too.
Ammanda, I shall know you’ve spotted me the minute I hear a squeal from any corner of the Hyatt. If I do come face-to-face with you, then we can see whose squeal is louder. π
On a very sober note:
Kathleen Woodiwiss passed away yesterday. Here’s what her son had to say.
Very sad about Kathleen Woodiwiss passing away — so happy, though, we had all her wonderful books to read. She really hooked me on historical fiction and sent me on my writing way.
LOL re the travel bookstore Tracy mentions. My husband works there since he retired from 35 heroic hardworking and underpaid years of running his own independent bookstore. It’s called Get Lost. The cubes are made by Eagle Creek, they’re terrific, and I’m sure most luggage stores have them.
Next time you go to Get Lost, Tracy, ask if Michael is there and say hi.
I always pack a ton of books too, just in case!
How great to know, Pam! I will definitley say hi to Michael next time I’m there!
I feel your pain. I’m trying to do it on a minimum of clothing and only 4 pairs of shoes this time–including the amazing gold slippers I found yesterday at Target to go with the Regency gown!
It’s my carry on stuff I’m worried about–already it weighs a ton…
Your post made me laugh, Amanda–especially the bit about the cats sleeping on your clothes. π Have a great time at the conference, everyone who is going!
I’m a pretty efficient packer, though I don’t usually travel as lightly as I could without all the books. π Men do have an advantage in packing, though–we wear fewer kinds of clothes, they mostly fold more easily than many female garments, and we generally only need a number of shoes which is a small multiple of our number of feet. And scientists (male or female, but especially male) have a particular advantage, because we are expected to look like total slobs!
I have one friend who travels amazingly lightly–he has special travel clothes that take up little room, don’t wrinkle, can be easily washed in the sink and dry quickly. He can travel for weeks with one small bag. That is a performance I can admire, but can’t match.

Day AND evening wear? Really? Sigh…I guess I am going shopping tomorrow after all. I just don’t have that variety of clothing anymore….
I can’t wait to see everyone in the Regency regalia. Can non-BM folks sneak a peek into the room you’ll be gathering in?
See you in Dallas. I’ll be the one with the bewildered look in my eye….
In fact, the cats had most unhelpfully slept on the pile, requiring a great deal of laundry and de-fuzzing.
An Exquisite would never say “I told you so” — but he might have just cause to do so.
As one particular, and unnamed, Exquisite does right now.
Bertie the Beau, at your service

Actually, Santa, non-Beau Monders can attend the soiree, too! (I just checked this to be certain, so you can quote me on this.)
Attendees can pay at the door — prices for the soiree at the door are $40 for non-Beau Monde members, or $30 for members. It will be from 8:45 pm to 11 pm, and feature a special dancemaster (who I hear is really good) — and I also heard something about live music! (Which always makes things much more elegant.)
I don’t know yet what room it’s in, though… But I’m sure there will be info on the bulletin board at the conference, or something similar…
Wish I were going!
