Today (I am writing this on Thursday) has been a rotten, rotten day. Not for any pointable reason, which might make it okay; no, I’ve just meandered around, not getting anything done, and done is how I like things.
I tried to write, but came up with a paltry page of kinda meh words. Not sure if they will survive in the next 24 hours. So rather than gripe (ahem! it’s a change of pace, okay?), I thought I’d make a list of what is, or might be able to, make me happy:
Clive (Thanks to Colleen Gleason for letting me know this was out there).
Friends (see above).
Getting the new Loretta Chase from Amazon.
Having my eyebrows threaded so I don’t look lopsided, or constantly surprised.
Starting a new book while waiting for Loretta Chase to arrive (um . . . not her, precisely, but her book), hopefully one with lots of gratuitous sex scenes.
Spring time might finally be here?
New black socks.
Mortgage rates went down today; we’re in contract for a house, haven’t yet locked in a rate.
I inherited my husband’s old iPod, and spent my subway time listening to Chemical Brothers–gotta get me some of those ‘Block Rockin’ Beats!’
Did I mention we are buying a house? In Brooklyn? NO MORE WHITE RENTAL PAINT!
My friend returned my copy of Persuasion, so I can watch Ciaran Hinds be all remote and hurt until he’s not. Le sigh.
What are your Reasons To Be Cheerful?
Megan
*You remember Ian Dury and the Blockheads, right? They also did “Sex And Drugs And Rock’n’Roll” and “Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick”
I’m cheerful today because, at this very moment, our new garage doors are being installed! For the first time in the 23 years we’ve been in this house, I will have a garage door opener on “my” side of the garage. Not only that, but we will have keyless entry. And the old, scraped and rotting doors will no longer mar the looks of our house. Whoo hoo.
I’m cheerful today because it’s not yesterday, which sucked royally. Also the husband will be coming home from a week long business trip and I will no longer be a single parent.
Sunshine helps.
Watching your kid(s) sleep is a goodie.
Certain corny songs do it for me.
1. None of my plants have died recently.
2. I saw a dumb video on youtube that made me laugh.
3. All the terrible things that keep happening to the X-Men haven’t happened to me.
4. My baby nephew came through his second surgery well.
5. My wrist isn’t hurting today.
6. I have tickets for a Genesis concert next fall, which I’ll be attending with my husband, both my brothers, and a family friend.
7. I live in an age of good plumbing (which Bertie keeps reminding me is a true luxury.)
8. My car is twelve years old, and still running. Even better, it’s purple. It doesn’t get much better than that.
Cara
Hmm. . . well, I’ve gotten around to watching last nights Jon Stewart and a few minutes last nights Jay Leno, so I should be really cheery after their jokes! π
Lois
My crocuses are blooming. The crocuses my kids and I planted last October, which came up during that weird warm spell in January only to be frozen and snowed on. Which came up again early this month, only to be frozen and dumped on again. May we all weather adversity so well!
You know, all of your guys’ comments are making me even happier! Thanks! (And Cara, I’ve killed every plant I’ve owned, so I am impressed).
I forgot to add that Cara’s post this week offers several more reasons to be cheerful. π
Sunshine and a few moments to myself, reading a book or chuckling over a blog post.
Diane, yikes! Three cheers for motorized automation.
Elena, yay, for eye candy.
It’s been a rough month, so I really need to do something like this:
1. The sun is shining.
2. We just moved into a new place with twice the square footage of the old. And I now have my very own office.
3. It doesn’t look like Felix Hernandez’s elbow injury is career-ending or even season-ending. (Which means nothing to you if you’re not a Mariners fan, but to us it means a lot.)
Megan, I’ve just ended up with some very hardy plants. My favorites are the kind that say on the tag “hard to kill.” π
And as it gets very hot here, I just get the hard-to-kill stuff that wants lots of sun, and water it well every one to seven days (depending on the heat.)
These are all container plants, mind you. Living on a balcony.
Cara
It’s 80 degrees and sunny outside, after weeks of gray rain! Yay! π
I’ve lost 5 pounds! Five more to go! Double yay!
Megan: I have cactii. Even those I’ve managed to kill–just discovered two today. But the others are very hardy, having survived six weeks once without a drop.
Susan: Congratulations on moving in to your new home. I’m sure the little one is thrilled with all that space.
Amanda: Your mother will have to alter that dress she just finished. Looks like the dance workouts are having a significant impact! π
My wife thought I stressed out too much, so she suggested I keep a diary and write in it all the things for which I am grateful. I forget to do this for weeks at a time, mind you, but I refuse to stress out about it.
Today I saw people doing Shakespeare scenes in the beautiful Huntington Gardens, which makes me cheerful. And it’s the weekend, which is doubly cheerful.
And I finally saw 300 today, which makes me cheerful that I am neither an ancient Spartan nor an ancient Persian. Or pretty much an ancient anybody!
